Mountain Green soldier receives warm welcome home

Reid Wilkinson, son of Dee and Lori Wilkinson, arrived at the Salt Lake City Airport on Thursday, April 17 in the evening. Reid just completed a nine-month deployment in Afghanistan and gets to spend two weeks with his family.

Morgan runner’s wife and child protected in Boston by a simple text

Morgan native Billy Peterson is an experienced runner, having competed in over 50 marathons including three previous runs in Boston.  During the race last week, Peterson did something unique in his running career: he took his cell phone and seemingly saved his wife and young daughter from tragedy.

Variety of opinions expressed at district’s information meeting

Many different opinions were aired at the last community meeting hosted by the Morgan County School District discussing the voted local levy. The April 18 meeting was held at Morgan Elementary School and was one of the last of the 18 meetings the district scheduled to disseminate information regarding the levy that will be on the June 25 ballot.

Request denied for group home

It was standing room only Tuesday when the Morgan City Planning Commission unanimously denied a conditional use permit for a residential group home.  More than 90 residents crowded the council chambers, where Alpha Counseling and Treatment presented plans for a group home for “disabled youth suffering from autism, Asperger’s syndrome and similar challenges” at 535 Derrick Circle.

School board appoints new board member

Interest was high in the Morgan County School Board seat vacated by Joey Skinner, but Mark Farmer was chosen above four other applicants as the newest school board member.  On Tuesday, he was appointed to serve until the end of 2014.

2013 Sterling Scholar - Taylor Preslar ~ Business
Natasha Andersen

Taylor Preslar, son of Mark and Vinda Preslar, is Morgan High School’s Business Sterling Scholar.  Preslar has been involved as a member of Academic Olympiad, Academic Decathlon and the debate team.  He has also served in leadership positions including National Honor Society vice president, debate president, FBLA officer, Valley United soccer captain and cross country team captain.  Last year he attended Boys’ State, a camp that involves students in simulated government processes.

Jazz band earns top scores at region

After months of practicing, the Morgan High Jazz Band was able to show off their skills, play some great music and take home top honors at the Region Jazz Festival. Held Wednesday, March 6 at Ben Lomond High, MHS band members played songs such as State Street Stomp, Mambo Hot and All Night Rain to the approval and top scores of the judges.

Baseball team finishes successful season

Tyson Lindley, a junior at Morgan High School, recently won the Hinds Quick Stop March Madness Challenge by correctly picking Louisville to win the NCAA basketball championship and by selecting many of the early-round and final-four winners.

The Northeastern Utah Region Sterling Scholars competition was held Monday, April 15, 2013, at Wasatch High School in Heber City.  This region consists of students from Altamont, Duchesne, Dugway, Grantsville, Morgan, North Summit, Park City, Rich, South Summit, Tabiona, Uintah, Union, Wasatch and Wendover high schools.

Morgan County is making equipment available to the public in an effort to control noxious weeds county-wide.  Backpack sprayers and sprayers that can be attached to ATVs will be available Mondays and Thursdays from the county extension office free of charge for county residents.  The equipment was purchased by the Morgan County Weed Board.

Hicks receives award

Ken Hicks was honored as the Morgan County recipient of the 2013 Utah Silver Bowl Award at a ceremony held at the Marriott Hotel in Provo, Utah, on April l6. A luncheon was given in honor of volunteers throughout the state featuring Bob Evans of Fox 13 News as master of ceremonies.  Remarks were offered by Lieutenant Governor Greg Bell and LaDawn Stoddard of the Utah Commission on Volunteers.

Morgan marathoner misses Boston disaster

“I’ve looked at it as a blessing in disguise,”  Gentry Lawson said of being too sick to attend Monday’s Boston Marathon.  Lawson had been excited to compete in the Boston Marathon; it was something on his bucket list that he was really looking forward to.

Not so long ago a young woman from Star Valley, Wyom., spent her time growing up with four brothers. Each of them being wrestlers, they did not hesitate to include her in their rough housing. Natalie focused her energy on the more refined skills related to dance, but she is a more capable wrestler than you might expect.
