Interesting to read the Standard-Examiner’s interview with Morgan Fire Chief Dave Rich, about the Morgan grass fire portends, meaning an indication or omen of something about to happen, something momentous!

It is Caucus time!!  Which means it is also time for the bi-annual criticism of Utah’s political system.  Many voices are saying it is time to move from the current caucus system to a direct primary system.  If you are questioning the current system, take this opportunity to participate and closely observe the process.  You might change your mind.  I did.

I enjoy reading the Morgan County News each week and keeping up to date with friends in the Valley. One of the sections I delight in checking is the Word of the Week, and I find the “Word” for the week, because I usually read the entire issue of the paper.

I really like your newspapers.  My grandpa gets them and likes them a lot.  Last week he showed me the pictures of the boys and girls basketball teams.  Congratulations to them.  It makes me want to work harder.

Thank you to the Christmas elves who were kind and thoughtful enough to leave lotion, hand soap and a Christmas towel on my doorstep. Also, to the individual who left a lighted, decorated wooden tree at my door. I’m sorry I was not at home so that I could thank you in person.

It is often said that watching or reading the news of the day can be a depressing experience because the majority of it is negative.  The Morgan County News is usually an exception to this perception of the media.  For the most part, the pages of this newspaper are filled with positive stories about the events occurring in the county; celebrations of birthdays, anniversaries, academic and athletic achievements, and many reports of people doing good and bettering the community.

The greatest of teacher said, “Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you.”  A perfect admonition, but have you ever been the one who has been cursed?  Do you even know those which despitefully use you and persecute you?  Thanks to the editor, Don Anderson and the Morgan County News, Josie Foster does; and thanks to Don, WE are the enemy!

Thank you for taking part in the R U Talented competition this last week. Morgan County floored me with the amount of votes you were able to get for MHS and McKenna. She was a fabulous representative for the school.

This edition marks the one hundredth issue published since Anne and I purchased The Morgan County News in November of 2009.  It has been an interesting, educational, and enjoyable ride.

Running a local newspaper in a town with only a small number of businesses is challenging.  For many years the newspaper has been on the edge of survival.  Since 1923 it has been a labor of love for the publishers who have owned the newspaper.

I am thankful for the opportunity we have to think of the good and positive aspects of our community and tell each other, by means of this newspaper. We all know some wonderful people that are in the Morgan area and one of my favorite people is Larry Turner. He is quite often standing by his bike and waving all that pass by. No matter what kind of day we are having, a wave from Larry with his big smile always makes things better.

Dear Editor:

A light was on Saturday night on the otherwise dark Commercial Street.  My husband and I rubber-necked half way to State. “What was that?!”

We would like to thank the many friends and neighbors who spent their Saturday morning helping cut, split and stack our winter’s supply of wood. Your service lifted a tremendous burden from our minds as well as our family. A special thank you to Richard Wiscombe for coordinating. Without you this would have never taken place. Thank you to those who have brought wood to our home. Thank you to all! We love and appreciate each one of you.

My name is Clyde Criddle. I have very fond memories of Como Springs, in fact very good ones. I worked for the Heiners for a few years mostly as a pin setter in the bowling alley and other jobs as needed.

I want to personally thank the crew and cast of “Annie” for an outstanding production.  Each member played an important role in the success of the event.  I especially extend appreciation to the parents and community for their attendance and support.  It is my hope that this is just the beginning of an annual event that brings the schools and citizens together at the beginning of each school year celebrating local talent and raising funds for a worthwhile cause.

26 Aug 2011 (All day)

As a former resident of Morgan I very much enjoyed the article in the News about Como Springs.  However, no mention was made of the Sunday band concerts performed by the Morgan High School band.  There used to be a bandstand at the far left-hand corner of the swimming pool and as a youngster I loved watching the band march single file along the edge of the pool to reach the bandstand.  By the time I was a member of the band the bandstand was no longer used for the concerts because the water deadened the sound of the music.  When I was in the band the concerts were played in the center of the park where chairs were set up for us.  Fond memories--not only of the band but of the dances and roller skating!  Also, I was baptized in the indoor swimming pool at Como.

I would like to thank everyone who helped with the 100th annual Morgan County Fair.  It would not have been possible without all of the people who donated their time to ensure the fair was a success.  I greatly appreciate all the support and dedication of the fairboard members and committees.  They are the reason the fair was so successful.  There are so many people who stepped up and worked non stop to make sure things were done.  A special thanks to our families who spent countless hours helping with whatever needed to be done.  Thanks to the County Council members that volunteered to help through out the fair.  I would also like to thank Rod and his crew for prepping the fairgrounds and maintaining them throughout the fair.  If I missed anyone who helped, I greatly appreciated all you did to make the Morgan County Fair the Best Little Fair in Utah.

The family of K. Earl Ericksen would like to sincerely thank this community for the expressions of love and sympathy shown to our family during the loss of our father/husband.  We have received an outpouring of concern that has greatly touched our hearts.  We appreciate our association with such wonderful people.

22 Jul 2011 (All day)

I have a few comments about the front page article about the Morgan County School District Transportation Department being over budget.  We know the main reason for this cost overage is due to fuel cost for an ever growing school system.  The school district is concerned with the future needs of a new school or even two new schools and remodeling cost.  They don’t have the money.  The school district talks about increasing school fees for students.  This school fee idea will only create a few thousand dollars which is nowhere close to the amount necessary to keep up with the cost of education.   I applaud the school district for not asking for a new Morgan County School District Office and Administration building.  They are working out of a small office in front of the Morgan Elementary School.  Good for them.

After reading the article in last week’s paper about the land owner and developer’s frustration I want to thank the County Council for protecting our community. It isn’t easy to stand up for the rules and regulations of our county, but we have a good county. This is the reason we voted you in to protect and take care of us.

Dear Editor,

…and readers.  This is in response to “The Biker” letter in your 6-10-11 issue.  The letter was written to “you”, which, barring further clarification, includes everyone besides the writer, including me.  “I”, and “you”, are found guilty of a lot of indecent, unthoughtful, vile things, culminating finally in cutting the biker off and killing him.  Now I’m definitely not perfect, but I’m not all those bad things, and I’ve certainly never harmed or killed a biker.  I feel like I, and the vast majority of the “you”, have been accused, found guilty, and sentenced, without ever being known, heard, or having a fair trial.

This is Hap Fry - We live along the river across from the Clark Farm here in Morgan. I was out taking pictures of the water building up. I found out that a tree had fallen in to the river up by the High School. Herald had told me that it was a huge tree. He had heard that there were huge branches broke off and coming down the river.

I saw you; hug your purse closer to you in the grocery store line.

You didn’t see me; put an extra $10.00 in the collection plate last Sunday.

I saw you; pull your child closer when we passed each other on the sidewalk.

You didn’t see me; playing Santa at the local mall.

I saw you; change your mind about going into the restaurant.

You didn’t see me; attending a meeting to raise more money for the hurricane relief.

I saw you; roll up your window and shake your head when I rode by

You didn’t see me; driving behind you when you flicked your cigarette butt out the car window.

I saw you; frown at me when I smiled at your children. You didn’t see me; when I took time off from work to run toys to the homeless.

I saw you; stare at my long hair. You didn’t see me; and my friends cut ten inches off for Locks of Love.

I saw you; roll your eyes at our leather coats and gloves. You didn’t see me; and my brothers donate our old coats and gloves to those that had none.

I saw you; look in fright at my tattoos.

You didn’t see me; cry as my children were born and having their name tattooed on my skin and in my heart.

I saw you; change lanes while rushing off to go somewhere.

You didn’t see me; going home to be with my family.

I saw you; complain about how loud and noisy our bikes can be.

You didn’t see me; when you were changing the CD and drifted into my lane.

I saw you; yelling at your kids in the car.

You didn’t see me; pat my child’s hands knowing he was safe behind me.

I saw you; reading the newspaper or map as you drove down the road.

You didn’t see me; squeeze my wife’s leg when she told me to take the next turn.

I saw you; race down the road in the rain.

You didn’t see me; get soaked to the skin so my son could have the car to go on his date.

I saw you; run the yellow light just to save a few minutes of time.

You didn’t see me; trying to turn right.

I saw you; cut me off because you needed to be in the lane I was in.

You didn’t see me; leave the road.

I saw you; waiting impatiently for my friends to pass.

You didn’t see me; I wasn’t there.

I saw you go home to your family.

You didn’t see me, because I died that day you cut me off.

To you I was just a biker, not a person with a family and friends.

You didn’t see me; and now they will never see me again.

Even if you don’t like us, respect our rights to ride what we choose and take a few extra seconds to be sure we are not in “your” way.

To make something like Operation Graduation a Success it needs help from everyone; parents, grandparents, community members, businesses and the Staff of Morgan High School. Everyone has helped to make it a success.

13 May 2011 (All day)

Last week an editorial commentary was submitted labeling the Morgan County Airport as a “heavily subsidized” burden on the taxpayers, and a “ridiculous” use of funds for something used by a minority of the county residents.  While everyone is entitled to an opinion and has a right to voice it, a little more research and thought regarding the issues will often alter one’s point of view:
