Morgan Middle School took ten 7th graders and eleven 8th graders to the state math competition last month and the results are back.  All 21 students scored in the top 50%.  Special congratulations are given to Sadie Carter, Logan Jones, Logan Cameron, Savana Carter, Jaiden Farr, and Tyler Payne for scoring in the top 25%, and to Carter Bailey, Ryan Milburn, Konnor Andrews, Weston Blocker, and Colin Smith for scoring in the top 10%.  Our students did an outstanding job, considering we were competing against all schools this year, no matter their size.  This would not be unlike all schools, from 1A through 5A, playing for the state championship in a given sport.

The beautiful cemetery that stands on the hill behind the LDS Ward on the old Highway Rd. in Mountain Green was the original pioneer burying grounds for the pioneer community. It was laid out in 1860 on land that was owned by David Bowman Bybee.  He sold .45 acre to the settlement of Mountain Green to provide a place of burial for early settlers.

We live in a time when it is quite common to witness the devastation around the world from hurricanes, tornados, tsunamis and earthquakes on the nightly news. To many, it seems as if these disasters are becoming more frequent.

Morgan City has engaged former Ogden Mayor Matthew Godfrey in a consulting contract to bring a hotel to the city.  The city council has been working for many years to entice a hotel to locate in the city with no results.  They recently completed a feasibility study for the area to help persuade developers to locate in the city.

“Create a plan...but remember - be prepared to change the plan!”, words of advice from a young Morgan High School graduate and who has followed her plan - and finding out that “plans change” - and Melissa Ovard has made the changes successfully by following her simple goals she made early in her life. Her story of how it “all came down” to leading a full and successful career now moving forward with confidence was told to the North Summit and Morgan High Schools’ Sterling Scholars at a Recognition Banquet hosted by Holcim, (US) Inc. The evening of March 29th Sterling Scholar Nominees from these two schools came with their parents to enjoy dinner with their families at Larry’s Chicken Inn in Morgan.

Several months ago, for his Eagle Scout project, Carson Rupe sent out a flyer to the Mountain Green community, to collect toothpaste, toothbrushes, dental floss and drugstore eye glasses for Haiti.  Some of these items were dropped off at his house, and he picked up others.  All in all, he gathered three big boxes full of dental floss, toothpaste and toothbrushes for a dental team (part of the Haiti Healthcare Initiative) to give to patients.  Part of the HHI project was to teach Haitians how to brush and floss, since the rate of dental problems is so high. For his Eagle project, Carson also gathered a number of reading glasses, and enough cash contributions to purchase over 60 more pairs of reading glasses.

Wesley and Janet Grandsen bought the house and the property from the Ostlers, according to Bob Huerta who worked and roomed with the Grandsens for five years.  County records verify they bought it from the Ostler Land and Livestock Co. in 1952. The Gransden’s ran cattle on the land which extended all the way to Snow Basin.  The Huertas said Gransdens had Arabian horses, and Carol Ralphs said they also grew hay for their cattle. There was an irrigation ditch where the Highlands office now stands. Mr. Hubbard said he was told the property was 3500 acres or more at that time.

Hubbard House continued from last week

One walking trail in Mountain Green parallels old highway, directly east of the Mountain Green exit. This walking trail was a community effort and took the dedicated work of many individuals to make it a reality.   In 1993, it was recognized by members of the community that a safety hazard existed for young children, walkers, and bike riders who traveled from Monte Verde, Polls and the Highlands to the Old Farm Market or from one subdivision to the other. Pedestrians had to walk on the edge of old highway road which is the main thoroughfare through Mountain Green and connects to Trappers Loop. Especially because of the increased traffic from Ogden Valley due to the completion of Trappers Loop road and the fact that this traffic had to use the old highway in order to connect with the interstate, an effort was made to solve the safety hazard—by creating a walking path.

As parents we attend Parent/Teacher Conferences because we are concerned about our children. We want to know how they are doing in school socially, academically, and gain some insight into our children’s lives when they are away from home. Teachers dutifully tell us our child’s academic strengths, weaknesses, and provide some knowledge regarding social growth. At some point during the conference DIBELS scores are mentioned. The purpose of this article is to provide basic information regarding DIBELS so you, as parents/guardians, will have a better understanding of what DIBELS scores mean for your child. It is important to understand how DIBELS works so you will be better equipped to be your child’s advocate. So, what are DIBELS?

Monday, February 20th the Sons of the Utah Pioneers had the very enjoyable opportunity to be addressed by Robert Woodford during their monthly meeting at Larry’s Spring Chicken Inn.  Calvin Stephens invited him to be our guest speaker which he graciously accepted.  He discussed the ongoing efforts of publishing the Joseph Smith Papers both in book form and on line.  He reported that there are many misconceptions based on incorrect readings of these documents.

Privacy issues are in the news nearly every week.  Whether it is Google changing its policies, or new legislation restricting the use of personal information.  Privacy legislation is often the bane of genealogical research, however, and it is also often more public relations than good public policy.
