395th FI Company returns from Iraq

On Wednesday Dec. 14, a group of Army Reserve Soldiers from Utah returned from serving in Iraq. Sergeant Major Patrick Shuldberg from Morgan, greeted his returning soldiers at the Salt Lake Airport.

Making Magic out of Collisions

Russell Moore and his wife Kristi are the owners of Canyon Collision. They have been serving the Morgan Residents for the past 3 years in the Auto body industry. He and his wife brought their business to Morgan when the auto body shop (formally called Classic Auto body, owned by Norm Kippen) became available.

County Reaches Agreement on Rollins Ranch

After months of negotiations the county reached agreement with the developers of Rollins Ranch.  The developer agreed to complete all identified improvements per the initial development agreement by August 31 and to pay the outstanding tax bill of approximately $23,000.  The county agreed to waive interest and penalties on the unpaid taxes, to take the developer out of default, and to begin issuing building permits once the taxes are paid and the improvements are complete.

School Board Struggles to Cover Transportation Deficit

The Morgan County School Board struggled on Tuesday night to find a solution to a shortfall of more than $100,000 in transportation funds caused by the increase in fuel costs.  The largest challenge is the overruns caused by picking children up for school and dropping them off.  A secondary issue is the number and length of trips taken by activity organizations (sports, band, choir, etc) and field trips at the elementary and middle school.

City Splashes Back Into Action

 

After a brief hiatus while the city finalized the new playground equipment and prepared for the summer events, the city is back on the trail towards a splash pad.  The city proposed a splash pad to residents last year after discussions with a number of residents in the county as well as visits to splash pads in other cities.  Morgan City is making this a community project and planning to primarily fund the construction of the splash pad with donated funds, material, and labor from local businesses and residents.  The city feels confident that they can raise the funds required.

Day Admits Guilt

In documents by The Morgan County News obtained through  a Government Records Access Management Act (GRAMA) request  from the investigation into the actions of Garth Day, the former Morgan County Council Administrator, additional details of the actions of Day were revealed.

School District Receives Interest Free Loan

At the School Board Meeting on Tuesday night the school board local building authority approved the issuance of $4 million in bonds for the school building projects.  The bonds will be purchased by Zions Bank.  The bank has agreed to purchase them at the same rate as the subsidized rate under the federal government program used for the bonds.  This means that the school district will be getting interest free money.

Numeracy

In the document “Promises to Keep” adopted by the Utah State Board of Education in August of 2009 it refers to the mission of Public Education.  Within this mission it states that Utah’s public education system keeps its constitutional promise by ensuring literacy and numeracy for all Utah children.

Kippen begins Serving on the County Council

Rhonda Kippen is the newest member of the Morgan County Council.  Kippen was appointed by the council to finish the term of Rodney Haslam after he resigned for health reasons.

Council Considers Haslam Replacement

In the county council meeting on Tuesday night, the council considered applicants for the district four council position. This position was recently vacated by Member Rod Haslam, who is suffering with health problems. The applicants were Fred Jacobson, Jim Jones, and Ronda Kippen.
Jacobson, Jones and Kippen appeared together before the council and answered questions. The candidates began with a summary of themselves and their qualifications.

Chelsea Pensioner's Records

In March, FindMyPast.com announced that many of the Chelsea Pensioner records have been digitized and indexed.  This is a big deal because they are the records on anyone who received a pension from the British Army from 1760 to 1913.  At the end of last week they announced that they had added 100,000 records to the collection.

New Postmaster in Morgan

After the county’s previous postmaster accepted a position in Hooper, Morgan was left without a postmaster for a few months. Dave Schroeder has now filled this vacancy and is the new postmaster for Morgan County

Is the Economy Effecting Your Property Taxes?

During the last few years school districts have been forced to rely more and more on local property taxes to supplement the money appropriated by the legislature to pay our teachers, maintain our facilities and pay for programs that enhance our students’ education.  This year, in a down economy, not only are the funds from the state budget impacted, but the local funding from property taxes will be affected as well.

City Moves Closer to New Road Bond

In a public hearing on Tuesday, with no public comment, the city made the final steps to approve at $101,000 road bond.  The city is bonding under the Build America Program made available from the Federal Economic Stimulus plan.  Under this plan the city can borrow at a discounted rate.
